Fibre drums are a type of storage drum, used to store and transport products. In contrast with steel drums or plastic drums, fibre drums are a cheaper, lighter and environmentally friendly alternative. Made from either fibre, be it natural or artificial, or paper, its materials are biodegradable and environmentally safe, unlike plastic drums. Because of these materials, fibre drums are also light, making them cheaper to ship and lighter to transport than steel drums. Conversely, they lack some of the durability offered by steel and plastic drums to carry chemicals or hazardous products. However, if you’re seeking an ecological container to ship non-corrosive products, a fibre drum is a solution worth considering.
Don’t be fooled by their lightweight or thin appearance. Fibre drums are just as durable and versatile as their plastic or steel counterparts, at a fraction of the cost. Due to their relatively lighter composition, fibre drums are not the preferred choice for chemicals or corrosive materials. However, in the textile, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage industries, they’re more than capable of safely storing and transporting products. They’re also suitable for personal use because they are light but durable. Fibre drums are regulated under the same United Nations certification as other containers, guaranteeing quality and capacity.
Fibre drums offer a strong, versatile solution that’s suitable for storing and transporting a wide range of different goods. We think that our range of good value fibre drums might be perfect for your needs. Our fibre drums are made from virgin kraft paper (or sometimes referred to as fibreboard or cardboard) with a metal chimb that is fitted to both the top and bottom of the drum for extra strength.
Often used for packaging goods like powders, granules, pharmaceuticals and hazardous products, we supply our fibre drums with a fully removable plastic lid that not only secures you drum with a metal lever closing ring, but also allows the drums to be stacked if you’re using a number of them for storage. All drums come with a blank exterior as standard but can, by request, be printed with logos, product information or hazard warnings. For peace of mind, our Fibre Drums as Group II UN approved as standard with Group I or III available be request.
Our fibre drums are a great and affordable alternative to plastic and steel drums. They’re strong and robust with a lever lock allowing for excellent and secure sealing. UN approved, versatile, and able to be used to transport and store a range of different goods, we supply fibre drums in the following sizes:
Each fibre drum we supply comes with the following features:
Fibre drums are a lightweight and cost effective alternative to plastic or steel barrels. Their ability to safely protect your product in storage and transportation has been widely proven across many industries.
For strength and security, they are sealed with steel chimbs, yet can be separated for recycling. Alternative designs are also available, such as all-fibre drums, which are ideal for lighter weight products.
Fibre drums are lightweight, which improves health and safety while lowering transportation costs. They are, however, capable of meeting the demands of most industries with the ability to improve their flexibility and efficiency by adding internal and external liners.
They’re also a more environmentally friendly option. Using fibre instead of plastic or steel containers helps to create a low carbon, circular economy.

Fiber drums have several benefits over other types of drums and containers:
Something we get asked a quite a lot is ‘what is the material difference between each type of Fibre Drum’, be it a cardboard, fibre or kraft. The simple answer is nothing! All of the above are different names for what the industry would collectively refer to as a Fibre Drum.
A Cardboard Shipping Barrel is another name given to what is more commonly known as a Fibre Drum. The metal lever closure at the top of the drum is locked in place making it suitable for shipping products. Made from recyclable material, although they can be used multiple times, they’re also easily disposed of.
Believe it or not, Fibre Drums can be stored outside, even in the rain! They have a moisture barrier to prevent degrading, yet are still fully recyclable within the usual cardboard recycling stream. These key factors make the weatherproof drums are a great alternative to plastic or steel drums.
However, please ensure you purchase a waterproof drum if storing outside.
Depending on the purpose for which you want to use a storage drum, you may be interested in a waterproof option. Fortunately, waterproof fibre drums are available. However, it’s important to note that not all fibre drums are waterproof. What distinguishes waterproof fibre drums from regular fibre drums is that the design of a waterproof fibre drum is fitted with plastic to lock out moisture. Therefore, if you’re interested in a fibre drum that can withstand being stored in a damp place or in the rain, consider a waterproof fibre drum, specifically request a waterproof option before buying.
Due to the nature of their lid and closing mechanism, fibre drums are airtight once they’ve been sealed. The lid is flat, with no tangible opening or handle to remove it. Instead, fibre drums feature a metal ring lining the diameter of the lid. This ring applies tension at the top of the fibre drum and is locked in place by a metal lever. All fibre drums also rely on tension to keep air out of the container, without using a metal ring. Having an airtight feature makes fibre drums ideal for storing products susceptible to moist air.
One of the many perks of using fibre drums for storage or shipping is that they’re environmentally friendly. Fibre drums are primarily made from materials such as paper (either in the form of kraft paper or cardboard) or natural or artificial fibre that can be recycled into everyday products. As a storage drum, it can be repurposed for personal use if no longer fit for commercial use, such as gardening or home storage. Furthermore, at the end of its life, the materials of your fibre drum are mostly biodegradable or can be destroyed with less energy output.
