IBC FAQs

An intermediate bulk container (IBC) is a pallet-mounted container used for bulk liquid storage and handling. It normally combines an HDPE inner bottle, protective metal cage, pallet base, top filling opening, bottom discharge valve and is a stackable container for transporting and storing liquids or bulk materials.

Service life depends on the container manufacturer, contents, UV exposure, handling, inspection history and intended use. Follow the product date markings, supplier instructions and any inspection or testing requirements that apply to the application. Lifespan also depends on type (new, rebottled, or reconditioned) and previous use. New IBCs could last 10+ years, while rebottled and reconditioned IBCs may have a shorter life depending on what they stored (abrasive hazardous liquids shorten lifespan). Proper maintenance and inspections extend longevity.

A water IBC is a cube-shaped HDPE container, typically an IBC 1000 litre, used for storing potable water. Only food-grade new or rebottled IBCs should be used for drinking water.

A compatible IBC may be suitable for diesel, but storage and transport are separate compliance questions. Confirm compatibility, dangerous goods approval where transport rules apply, and the site’s fire, environmental and secondary containment requirements before use.

A new IBC uses unused bottle, cage, pallet, valve and closure components. A rebottled IBC combines a new inner bottle and valve with a previously used cage and pallet. A reconditioned IBC retains previously used bottle and cage components that have been cleaned, inspected and leak tested.

New IBC – Contain unused bottles, cages, valves and closures. Selected configurations may be supplied with UN approval or food grade documentation. Check the individual product for the intended use.

Rebottled IBC – Combine a new inner bottle and valve with a previously used cage and pallet. They can be a cost effective option for compatible non-hazardous liquids. Food contact, drinking water and dangerous goods suitability must be confirmed on the product page.

Reconditioned IBC – Retain previously used bottle and cage components that have been cleaned, inspected and leak tested. Use them only for compatible non-hazardous liquids.

Only selected complete configurations are UN approved. Approval applies to a tested packaging design type and its specified closures and conditions of use. Check the details on each product page for further information.

Only use an IBC described as food grade. Check that the description covers the bottle, colour, valve, lid and seals, together with the intended contents, contact time and temperature.

Many IBCs use an S60×6 outlet, but other valve and thread formats exist. Match the fitting to the exact valve, thread, gasket and product code rather than relying on container capacity alone.
