A Gusseted Bag is a type of bag that has expandable sides or bottom panels (gussets), allowing it to increase in volume when filled. These gussets provide extra space, making the bag more flexible and capable of holding bulkier items.
The two most common type of Gusseted Bag are:
What is a Side Gusseted Bag?
A side gusseted bag has extra material on both sides (gussets) that expand when the bag is filled. This allows the bag to accommodate larger/bulkier items while maintaining a flat, compact shape, when empty.

How to measure a side Gusseted Bag
Measuring a side gusseted bag correctly is essential to ensure its meets your requirements. The three key measurements required are the width (W), width including gusset(G) and finally, the length (L).
W/G x L
Width – Measure the bottom lay flat width of the bag.
Width including gusset – Fully open the bag and now measure the top layflat width of the bag.
Length – Measure the length of the bag.
Selecting the Right Thickness for LDPE Side Gusseted Bags
Choosing the correct thickness for your side gusseted bags is crucial to ensure product protection, durability, and cost-effectiveness. The thickness of these bags is typically measured in microns (mu) or gauge, where 100 microns = 400 gauge.
For lightweight items a thinner bag (e.g. 20-50 mu) is usually sufficient. However, for heavy or bulky item a thicker bag, around 100mu may be preferred to prevent tearing. Also, if the packaged items will undergo rigorous handling or long distance transportation, opting for a thicker bag can provide added durability.
Common Thickness Ranges:
Gusseted Bags really are an essential packaging solution for a wide range of industries and uses. Their unique design, which allows for increased capacity and stability, offers businesses the opportunity to present their products effectively while ensuring safety and protection. From food and cosmetics to industrial applications, gusseted bags provide the flexibility needed to adapt to various product needs.
Gusseted bags are a specialised form of packaging that feature expandable sides (gussets). This design significantly increases the bag’s capacity while maintaining stability and ease of use. Unlike standard flat bags, gusseted bags can accommodate a wider variety of product shapes and sizes, making them more versatile in their applications. The gussets can be found at the bottom or sides of the bag, and they expand when the bag is filled, creating additional space without compromising the integrity of the bag.
One of the primary advantages of gusseted bags is their storage capacity. The expandable sides allow these bags to hold more products than traditional flat bags of the same dimensions. This means businesses can package more items in a single bag, reducing the need for multiple containers and ultimately saving material costs. For industries that frequently deal with bulk products, such as food or textiles, this increased capacity can translate into significant savings.
When comparing gusseted bags to traditional flat bags, the differences are quite pronounced. Traditional flat bags have a fixed size and shape, which limits their capacity and versatility. While they may work for small or uniform items, they often fail to accommodate products of varying shapes or sizes effectively. In contrast, gusseted bags adapt to the contents, allowing for a more dynamic packaging solution that can handle an array of products without compromising on presentation or function.
From a cost perspective, gusseted bags can also provide better value in the long run. While they may have a slightly higher initial cost compared to flat bags, the savings achieved through increased capacity, reduced material usage, and enhanced product protection often outweigh the difference.
Gusseted bags are incredibly versatile and find applications across numerous industries. In the food sector, they are extensively used for packaging snacks, grains, and frozen goods
In the cosmetic and personal care industry, gusseted bags are utilised for packaging items such as lotions, creams, and beauty products.
Furthermore, the industrial sector also benefits from gusseted bags, particularly for packaging bulk materials like chemicals, powders, and parts.
When selecting gusseted bags for your packaging needs, several factors must be taken into account. First and foremost is the material of the bag. Depending on the product being packaged, you may require a specific type of plastic or paper that offers the necessary durability and barrier properties. For instance, food items often need bags made from food safe materials that provide moisture and oxygen barriers to maintain freshness.
Another important factor is the size and dimensions of the bags. It’s crucial to select a gusseted bag that fits the product snugly without excessive empty space. This not only helps in minimising packaging costs but also ensures that the product is protected during transport. Measuring your products and understanding the appropriate bag dimensions will help in making an informed decision.
Finally, consider the closure method of the gusseted bags. Depending on the intended use, you may want bags that can be heat sealed or cable tied.
